Patna: The Union ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) removed all stops in reducing the road travel time between Bettiah in Bihar and Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh substantially by approving a 10.5-kilometre-long four-lane bridge on the river Gandak.
The much-demanded bridge will be constructed on the 29 km stretch of NH727AA (Bettiah-Pipraghat-Shewarhi) in West Champaran district of Bihar. A sum of ₹3,000 crore is likely to be spent on the project. With the nearest bridge located in Gopalganj district, people have to take recourse to the boat ride to cross the river and go to Kushinagar.

Once the bridge is built, the distance between Bettiah and Kushinagar will come down to 73 km from the present distance of 103 km. Similarly, road travel from Bettiah to Gorakhpur will be reduced to 125 km from 160 km via the nearest available road route.
According to officials of the road construction department in Bihar, the MoRTH has approved the construction of the bridge and the related highway. A notification under section 3 (D) of the NH Act 1956 will be issued soon to acquire the required portion of land for building the bridge and residual section of the national highway.

Gandak river flows from Bhainsalotan (Nepal) in West Champaran district of Bihar and meets Ganga in Sonpur of Saran district. This will be the 11th bridge on this 260 km long stretch of the river.
This bridge will be built between two streams of the river between Manuapul and Pipraghat in UP in West Champaran district. Its total length will be 10.5 km. Bettiah-Patjirwa – Pipraghat-Shevarahi NH (727AA) is 29 km long. This highway is 27 km in Bihar and 2 km in Uttar Pradesh.

What is 3-D notification?
3-D notification contains the details of the land of the raiyats to be acquired for the construction of the bridge. After its publication, the process of land acquisition and offering of compensation for the land acquired starts. Nobody can make any changes in the nature of land once the notification is issued. The land owners cannot make any other claim or objection except the compensation for the land.
