MoRTH approves Sasaram-Patna expressway at ₹2,979-Cr cost

The Union ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) has approved the Bihar’s road construction department’s (RCD) proposal to build a greenfield expressway and asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to finalise the alignment

Patna: The capital city of Bihar, Patna, will be connected with Sasaram, the western district abutting Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi, via an expressway.

The Union ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) has approved the Bihar’s road construction department’s (RCD) proposal to build a greenfield expressway and asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to finalise the alignment.

Officials of the NHAI said that they had provisionally drawn the alignment of the proposed expressway, classified as NH-119A, from Patna’s Sadisopur to Suara in Sasaram via Patar in Ara. The expressway, originating from Patna’s ring road, will merge with the Grand Truck (GT) road near Suara area.

MoRTH notifies new expressway

The MoRTH has recently issued a notification for development of the 118km long expressway, which will be executed under Bharatmala-1 project. This is the first expressway project to be delivered at the fastest speed in Bihar, the way has been cleared for its construction. Now the land acquisition process will start.
Tender to be issues once 75% land is acquired

NHAI officials said that they would float the tender for construction of the expressway, once the state government handover possession of 75% land of the project, free from any encroachment. As per the previous construction time, the project might take seven-eight year to complete. The road will be built in four-six lane configuration from Sadisopur to Patar, which will be 35km in length, and the 83 km, from Patar to Suara will be constructed in four-lane.

The 2-package project may cost ₹2,979-Cr

A total of ₹2,979 crore is likely to be spent on the construction of this express, which would be segmented in two packages for easy implementation. While a sum of ₹1494.69 crores will be spent on the construction of Sadisopur-Patar (Ara) 4/6 lane highway. Of the total expenditure, ₹1,143 crore has been allocated for civil work, while the rest ₹353 crore wold be spent on acquisition of 191 hectares land.

The cost of construction of four-lane lane expressway from Patar (Ara) to Sasaram (Suara) is estimated around ₹1484.72 crore, which includes ₹1,076 crores on construction and ₹408 crore for acquiring 374 hectares of land.

Patna’s access to Golden Quadrilateral to be made easy

The people coming through road via Patna will have an easy access to the Golden Quadrilateral, once the new expressway is complete for operation. The Golden Quadrilateral is the most important old road of North India, which connects Delhi and Kolkata via UP, Bihar and Jharkhand. Right now the best and fastest route to reach Delhi or Kolkata from Patna and other districts of South Bihar is the Golden Quadrilateral. But there is not a single fast route to reach it from Patna.

Proposed alignment of expressway

Greenfield Expressway will be built parallel to the existing Ara Sasaram road. Expressway will start after reaching Sadisopur on Ring Road from Patna city. Crossing the Son river from Sadisopur, a 118 km long expressway will be built from Ara city to Gadhani-Piro-Bikramganj-Sanjhauli to (Suara) Sasaram via Ara (Patar) in the south. The distance from Sadisopur to Patar will be 35 kms. At the same time, the distance from Ara Bypass to Sasaram will be 83 km.
