Free wifi facilities to be launched at 12 places of public gathering

Patna: Visitors of as many as 12 places of public gathering will get free wifi facilities in the state capital. The Patna municipal corporation (PMC) has on Wednesday floated tender to invited expression of interests from reputed firms to install wifi facility and maintain the system.

Inter state bus terminal (ISBT) at Bairiya, Ganga Path, Eco Park, Dinkar roundabout in Kadamkuan, etc. are the areas to get the free wifi facilities. Officials of the PMC said that tender for the project was floated after the empowered standing committee (ESC) and the PMC board approved the proposal, which is likely to cost ₹2.50 crore.

Patna became the first city in the world to have launched longest free wifi zone, which covered nearly 20 km stretch of road between the National Institute of Technology (NIT) at the eastern end of the Ashok Rajpath and Danapur at the western end of the state capital, Patna. Chief minister Nitish Kumar had opened it in 2014. Prior to this, China boasted of the longest zone of 3.5 km.

However, the wifi facilities got disrupted soon after the road construction department (RCD) began construction of a couple of flyovers on Bailey Road. However, various colleges continued to have the facilities for students.

A senior officer of the PMC said that Patna mayor Sita Sahu had pursued the proposal of free wifi at public places in accordance with her pre-election assurance to the people. She said that ambit of free wifi network would be extended to other public places after successful operation of the facility at 12 locations.

The free high-speed internet facility will be launched next month, if the process of selection of the agency is conducted as per the schedule. People can access the free wifi facility at Patna junction, Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport, Patna.
