NIRF 2023: IIT Madras tops overall list, IISc, Bengalore best varsity

Ministry of education releases the NIRF 2023 ranking for various institutions on the basic of infrastructure and performance at a function held in New Delhi

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) continues to retain the top position in the higher education category in the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) rankings, released by the ministry of education, Government of India, on Monday.

Union minister of state for external affairs and education Rajkumar Ranjan Singh announced the results of the eighth edition of NIRF India ranking in New Delhi and gave away the prizes.

Continuing its dominance in the higher education, IIT Madras held its number 1 position in ranking in the ‘overall’ category for the 5th consecutive year and in the ‘engineering’ category for the eight consecutive year, since the ranking was started in 2016.

In the ‘research institutions’ category, IIT Madras was ranked 2nd, its previous position, while it also clinched the 2nd rank in ‘innovations’ category. Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, has topped the university category.

Singh said, “NIRF Rankings have helped students in selecting the best lot of institutes imparting higher education in the country. “It also helps the Institute to identify the areas of improvement in teaching, research, resources and other aspects. This initiative has fostered a culture of data organisation and curation among participating institutes, promoting healthy competition.”

“Institutes such as IITs, IIM, NITs, IIITs are doing well in India ranking in 2023. It is also heartening to see the rankings are pointing to the evolution of private universities. I congratulate the institutes which have done well and would like to encourage the other institutes to achieve well in forthcoming edition of NIRF rankings,” exhorted the minister.

Professor V Kamakoti, director, IIT Madras, received the award, accompanied by Professor RG Robinson, dean (administration), Prathap Haridoss, dean (academic courses) and M Thenmozhi, head, department of management studies, IIT Madras, at the event.
