New Delhi: Amidst burgeoning fear of JN.1 infections, India on Sunday reported 841 fresh cases of Covid-19, the highest in 227 days, according to a health ministry bulletin issued in New Delhi.

Three people suffering from Covid infections succumbed to the disease while treatment in Kerala, Karnataka and Bihar in the last 24 hours, which also saw the number of active cases going up to 4,309.

The cases of Covid infection is rising since December 5. Till that day, the number of people falling sick to the disease was restricted in double digits. But cases have begun soaring up after emergence of a new variant, JN.1, and chilly weather conditions.

Reports say that so far more than 4.50 crore people have been infected by the virus since it begun spreading in early 2020. Lakhs of people were getting infected by Covid19 daily during the peak of pandemic. Over 5.3 lakh deaths in about four years since then across the country. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease stands at over 4.4 crore with a national recovery rate of 98.81%.

Meanwhile, 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccines have so far been administered in the country.

178 cases of JN.1 infection reported till Friday

Reports say that as many as 178 cases of JN.1 were found in nine states, with Goa reporting the highest count at 47 followed by 41 in Kerala. The other states where JN.1 cases have been detected are Gujarat (36), Karnataka (34), Maharashtra (9), Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu (4 each), Telangana (2) and Delhi (1).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the national public health agency of the US, has recently stated that JN.1 had fuelled rise in cases of infections in the US. JN.1 is now the most widely circulating variant in the United States.
