Bengaluru: The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has announced a significant increase in the compensation amount under its group insurance scheme for employees, raising it from ₹3 lakh to ₹10 lakh. This revision, effective from February 19, 2024, aims to provide enhanced financial security to the families of employees who pass away due to illness or other causes.
On December 31, 2024, a total of ₹1.70 crore was disbursed to the families of 17 deceased employees. Each family received ₹10 lakh during a ceremony presided over by transport minister Ramalinga Reddy. Addressing the gathering, he emphasized the importance of utilizing the compensation for children’s education and family welfare.

Health Challenges Among BMTC Employees
A recent study by the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research has revealed alarming health statistics among BMTC drivers. Conducted as part of a comprehensive health screening program for 8,200 employees since August 2022, the study highlighted that:
- 40% of drivers are diabetic.
- 40% suffer from hypertension.
- 62% have high blood pressure, increasing their risk of cardiovascular complications.
- 5% were found to have heart blockages.
- 35% are regular smokers.

In light of these findings, BMTC Managing Director Ramachandran announced plans to conduct regular health check-ups for employees. “The health and well-being of our workforce are of paramount importance. This initiative reflects our commitment to addressing these challenges and ensuring a healthier future for our employees,” he stated.
Recognition for Excellence
During the same ceremony, Depot Managers who demonstrated exceptional performance by efficiently operating vehicles during festive seasons, leading to increased revenue, were honored. They received certificates of appreciation and cash prizes in recognition of their contributions.
