Bengaluru: In a major drive against encroachments, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) cleared unauthorized structures built on a significant portion of stormwater drain in the RR Nagar zone near the HMT ward. The operation, conducted under the direction of zonal commissioner Satish, resulted in the removal of sheds and garages that had illegally occupied approximately 100 meters of the drain’s stretch.
The stormwater drain, located near the Government First Grade College adjacent to Tumkur Main Road and SRS Signal, had been encroached upon by 35 to 45 sheds and a garage, obstructing its intended flow and functionality. The BBMP took swift action to reclaim the area after receiving complaints and conducting site inspections.

On Monday morning, BBMP officials, accompanied by police personnel, marshalls, and revenue department officers, initiated the clearance operation. The encroachments were thoroughly inspected before being demolished using two JCB machines. Residents occupying the sheds were relocated prior to the operation to ensure their safety and prevent any inconvenience.
Speaking about the drive, an official from BBMP stated, “Encroachments on stormwater drains lead to significant issues such as flooding during heavy rains. This clearance operation is part of our ongoing effort to ensure that such critical infrastructure remains unobstructed.”

The BBMP has taken possession of the reclaimed land and issued strict warnings to residents to prevent further encroachments. “Residents were clearly informed that any future encroachments on this or any other stormwater drains will face strict legal action,” the official added.
The clearance drive was supervised by executive engineer Papareddy, along with officers from the revenue and engineering departments. Police and marshals were also present to maintain law and order during the operation.

Local residents appreciated the move, citing frequent flooding and drainage issues caused by the encroachments. “This action was long overdue. During the rainy season, water would overflow due to blocked drains, causing severe inconvenience to everyone in the area,” said a resident.
The BBMP has intensified its efforts to tackle encroachments across the city, particularly on stormwater drains and other essential infrastructure. The corporation has urged citizens to report any unauthorized constructions to prevent further violations.
