Patna: Good news for the students aspiring to pursue degree in medical streams. They will have another institution—Govt Purnia Medical College and Hospital (GMCH)—run by the state government to impart degree in medical and surgery (MBBS).
Officials said that GMCH, coming up on 23 acre land in Purna with all necessary infrastructure, will start taking admission in the MBBS course from the this academic session. The National Medical Council (NMC), which carried out inspection of the campus, declined giving its nod for enrolling students in its MBBS course from the current academic session.
“We will soon approach the NMC for its nod to start the process of admission as the state government has decided to fill up vacancies on both teaching and non-teaching posts soon. That was a major bottleneck for seeking the NMC clearance to admit 100 students in the first batch of the MBBS,” said a senior officer of the GMCH.
A senior officer of the state health department said that the cabinet cleared its proposal to appoint 135 teaching and 423 non-teaching staff, required to run the MBBS course as per the NMC norms.
The team of NMC had visited the college campus last year, but declined giving no objection certificate (NOC) to allow admissions in the MBBS course. The team had found that doctors appointed as principal and medical superintendent were not qualified for the posts they held.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of the college in virtual mode in 2019 and it was start admission in the MBBS course in the 2022-23 academic session. Officials said that the college was to be fully by March 2022.

The first NMC inspection was carried out here on August 11, 2021. The team, officials said, declared both superintendent and principal not eligible for the post. “During a surprise inspection, the team found some of the doctors absent,” they said.
GMCH principal Dr Iftekhar Ahmad said, “A three-member NMC team carried out a two-day-long inspection of GMCH, which concluded on Tuesday.”
The team was led by Babu Rao of Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad.
Diplomat of National Board (DNB) courses started at the GMCH in obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics and general medicine with 12 seats each last year. The building is almost complete and superintendent and principal, besides 28 doctors and resident professors, have already been appointed.

Presenting Bihar’s annual budget for next fiscal in the legislature recently, then deputy chief minister and finance minister Tarkishore Prasad had expressed the government’s strong commitment to start the GMCH in Purnia from this year.
