Apple to hire 5 lakh staff in India to scale up production range

New Delhi: Apple Inc, an American multinational technology company, is set to hire around 5 lakh staff in India in phases to scale up production of its products, including iPhone, said a government officer.

Most of the employees will be hired through vendors and component suppliers over the next three years. Currently, Apple has around 1.5 lakh employees in the country. A majority of them are engaged in two manufacturing plants being run by the Tata Electronics.

The Cupertino-based company is looking to enhance its product line by five-times with a view to raising its revenue five-fold, amounting $40 billion (₹3.32 lakh crore) over the next four-five years, company sources said. The company has decided to expand manpower after it achieved the highest revenue in the country for the first time in 2023, a Counterpoint Research study said.

Massive rise in iPhone exports

The study further revealed that Apple not only surpassed the shipment of 10 million units for the first time in a year but also claimed the leading spot in terms of revenue.

Besides gaining impressive revenue from Indian plants, the iPhone maker has also seen a dramatic rise in iPhone exports from India. The study stated that the revenue of the company has doubled to $12.1 billion in the fiscal year 2023-24 from $6.27 billion in the previous fiscal year, marking a significant increase of nearly 100%.

The Apple Inc has also decided to team up with a Mumbai-based solar energy solution provider, CleanMax, with a view to reducing the carbon emission from its Indian plants. The companies will come together to invest in six rooftop solar projects in India, which are expected to generate a combined output of 14.4 megawatts (MW), and will be used to power Apple’s offices and stores.
