Patna to get its 1st subway, linking Bihar Museum & Patna Museum

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, which has been appointed as tech consultant for the project by UDHD, has finalised the interior design of the subway to be constructed at ₹373 crore

Patna: The capital city of Patna will get its first sub-way. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which has been roped in as the technical consultation by the Bihar’s urban development and housing department (UDHD) for development of metro rail in Patna, has floated the tender to appoint the suitable construction for building the 1.50km long underground tunnel.

The underground tunnel, which will connect the historic Patna Museum with Bihar Museum, will have an art gallery to showcase the art, culture and heritage of the state through Madhubani painting, said a senior DMRC official, adding that a sum of ₹373 crore would be spent on it.

The walls of the subway, set to cross over the underground tunnel for Patna metro at Bailey road at the vertical distance of about 6.5 metres, will be decorated with murals and artefacts on its way. The first look of the interior design of the subway has been released recently by DMRC.

An official of the DMRC, who is looking after the museum subway, said various construction companies had submitted their bid documents and the process to evaluate the bid documents will start soon.

DMRC officials said the subway would be technological marvel. The entry and exit area of the construction will have a ground-plus first-floor structure with three-level basements. “There will be facilities for security check, lift, toilets and other utilities for the convenience of the public at the entry and exit points,” she added.

The tunnel will be sort of an art gallery, showcasing the states art, culture and heritage through Madhubani painting, murals and other artefacts on the tunnel walls. Apart from connectivity, the tunnel will attract art lovers and visitors also, said the release from the DMRC, adding that the subway will also be equipped with battery operated Golf Car for smooth, convenient, and eco-friendly transit service to the visitors.

A tunnel boring machine (TBM) will be used at the depth of 16.5 metre for constructing the tunnel in 8-metre diameter. This subway tunnel will run about 15 to 20 m below the ground level. The Patna metro tunnel will pass at a depth of 29 m at the crossing point. There will be a vertical clearance of about 6.5 m between subway tunnels and Patna Metro tunnel at the crossing point below Bailey Road.
