Patna: In a landmark move, the Bihar government has formed a nine-member trust, the Shree Janaki Janam Bhumi Punaura Dham Mandir Nyas Samiti, to spearhead the construction of a grand Janaki Mandir and the redevelopment of Punaura Dham, the birthplace of Goddess Sita.

Located just 5 km from Sitamarhi town, this sacred site is set for a transformative makeover, inspired by the iconic Ram Temple in Ayodhya. With a ₹120 crore budget and a visionary blueprint, Bihar is poised to create a spiritual and cultural hub that blends heritage, faith, and modern tourism.

CM unveiled majestic temple design

On June 22, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar shared the finalized design of the Janaki Mandir complex on social media, stating, “It gives me immense pleasure to announce that the design for the comprehensive development of Punaura Dham, Sitamarhi, that includes construction of a grand temple and other structures, is now complete.” Backed by cabinet approval, a private design consultant, and a ₹120 crore budget, the project reflects Bihar’s dedication to creating a world-class pilgrimage site.

A multifaceted spiritual destination

The Punaura Dham redevelopment transcends a traditional temple project, aiming to craft an immersive experience for diverse visitors. Key features include:

Sita Vatika and Luv-Kush Vatika: Sacred gardens dedicated to Goddess Sita and her sons, enhancing the spiritual ambiance.

Parikrama Path: A dedicated pathway for pilgrims to perform ritual circumambulation.

Interactive Kiosks: Technology-driven displays narrating Sita’s life and legacy, merging tradition with modernity.

Visitors’ Amenities: A cafeteria, children’s play areas, and modern facilities to cater to families and tourists.

These elements ensure Punaura Dham appeals to devotees, culture enthusiasts, and casual visitors alike.

Punaura Dham’s cultural and economic significance

As the birthplace of Goddess Sita, a central figure in the Ramayana, Punaura Dham holds profound spiritual importance, drawing thousands of devotees annually. Yet, its infrastructure has not matched its reverence. This project bridges that gap, positioning the site as a global pilgrimage destination. By integrating modern amenities, Bihar aims to boost tourism, stimulate local economies, and elevate its image as a state that honors its ancient heritage while embracing progress.

A model for sustainable spiritual tourism

Drawing parallels with the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, which has revitalized Uttar Pradesh’s cultural and economic landscape, the Janaki Mandir project is a strategic endeavor. Its non-political focus and clear administrative structure set it apart, ensuring it remains a unifying celebration of faith and heritage. By blending reverence with innovation, Bihar is crafting a blueprint for sustainable spiritual tourism that could inspire similar initiatives across India.

This transformative project marks a new era for Punaura Dham, promising to cement its status as a beacon of Bihar’s rich cultural legacy and a must-visit destination for global pilgrims.
