Bengaluru: In a significant move to improve the condition of parks and green spaces across the city, chief commissioner of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Tushar Girinath has issued directives to officials to assess and address the state of borewells in all parks under the civic body’s jurisdiction. The announcement came during a high-level meeting held at the BBMP headquarters on Monday.
With summer approaching, the city’s parks, lakes and medians are in dire need of adequate water supply to sustain their greenery. Girinath emphasized the urgency of evaluating the condition of borewells in these parks. He instructed officials to submit a detailed report on the number of functional and non-functional borewells and to ensure immediate arrangements for water supply in parks where borewells are defunct.

Recycled Water to the Rescue
To tackle the water crisis, the BBMP has proposed an innovative solution, utilizing treated water from sewage treatment plants. The chief commissioner directed officials to coordinate with the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to transport treated water through tankers to parks, ensuring that trees and plants receive the necessary hydration. This initiative not only addresses water scarcity but also promotes sustainable water management practices.
Clearing Dry Leaves and Setting Up Compost Units
As the city transitions into summer, dry leaves from trees have begun to accumulate across parks and streets. “Instructed officials to identify designated spots for clearing these leaves and to take necessary steps to maintain cleanliness. In a bid to promote eco-friendly practices, we are also setting up 100 leaf composters in select parks. These composters will convert fallen leaves into organic manure, which will then be used to nourish the very plants and trees in the parks. This circular approach is expected to enhance soil fertility and reduce waste,” Girinath explained.

A Greener Vision for Bengaluru
Bengaluru, often referred to as the “Garden City,” is home to 1,280 parks. The BBMP’s latest initiatives aim to restore and rejuvenate these green spaces, ensuring they remain vibrant and sustainable. The installation of leaf composters in 100 parks is already underway, with work expected to be completed soon. This project aligns with the city’s broader goals of promoting environmental sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint.
The meeting was attended by several key officials, including special commissioners Munish Moudgil, Vikas Kishore Suralkar, K Harish Kumar, and Avinash Menon Rajendran. Zone commissioners Satish, Archana, Ramya, Karigowda, Snehal, Ramesh, Digvijay Bodke, and Girish were also present, along with Chief Engineers Prahlad and other senior officials. Their collective efforts underscore the BBMP’s commitment to transforming Bengaluru’s green spaces into thriving ecosystems.
The BBMP’s proactive measures to address water scarcity, manage waste, and promote sustainability reflect a renewed focus on preserving Bengaluru’s natural heritage. As the city gears up for the summer months, these initiatives promise to enhance the quality of life for its residents while setting a benchmark for urban environmental management. With the implementation of these plans, Bengaluru’s parks are set to become greener, cleaner, and more sustainable, reaffirming the city’s status as India’s Garden City.
