New Delhi: There will be no complaints of frequent patches of buffering, low transfer of internet data and frequent interruptions in mobile network due to unavailability of internet link in Durgapur and Bardhman areas of West Bengal.
NIXI (National Internet eXchange of India), a not-for-profit organization set up for peering of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) among themselves for the purpose of routing the domestic traffic within the country, has opened two new Internet exchange points (IXPs) at these locations.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, formally launched the facilities at Durgapur and Bardhman on Sunday via video conferencing. He said that the launch of IXPs was part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India vision to connect every Indian with open, safe & trusted and accountable internet and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s (MeitY) vision 1000 days.
Internet exchanges in States are expected to contribute to the enhancement and improvement of Internet and Broadband services in West Bengal and neighbouring regions, ISPs will benefit with improved internet services offered by them to its end users, bringing about a change in the lives of the people.

Chandrasekhar, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said, “Internet today has become a lifeline for all economic activities. It is essential to access a host of services both public and private, available online. The internet exchanges will ensure a better internet experience for the Digital Nagriks of West Bengal”.
Member of Lok Sabha SS Ahluwalia, who attended the event at Durgapur, said, “The Internet today is the backbone of a community – connecting people with not just businesses and services, but to each other. I am proud to be part inauguration of the twin Internet eXchanges at Bardhaman and Durgapur today by NIXI.”
Ahulwalia further said the Government’s initiatives towards bridging the ‘Digital divide’ not only ensured the people, placed even in the farthest corner of our land, to stay connected but they also felt empowered under the guiding motto of the PM, SabkaSaath, SabkaVikaas, SabkhaVishwaas and SabkaPrayaas.
NIXI is a not-for-profit organization under section 8 of the Companies Act 2013, and was registered on 19th June, 2003. NIXI was set up for peering of ISPs among themselves for the purpose of routing the domestic traffic within the country, instead of taking it all the way to US/Abroad, thereby resulting in better quality of service (reduced latency) and reduced bandwidth charges for ISPs by saving on International Bandwidth. NIXI is managed and operated on a Neutral basis, in line with the best practices for such initiatives globally.
