Hajipur: The East Central Railway (ECR) has set a new record in loading of maize for fright in the initial two months of this fiscal. A total of 172 rakes of maize were loaded in the current financial year 2024-25 till May 20, 2024 (i.e. from April 1, 2024 to May 20, 2024), which yielded a revenue of ₹62.25 crore. Whereas in the entire financial year 2023-24, a total of 311 rakes of maize were loaded by ECR and revenue of ₹146 crore was earned from it.
Maize is mainly loaded from Sonpur and Samastipur divisions of ECR. These rakes are generally transported to Ambala, Rudrapur etc. stations of northern India and Erode and Tirupur etc. stations of southern part of the country.

Bihar, which mainly caters to the ECR for passengers’ traffic and freight services, happens to be a leading producer of maize in the country.
In the current financial year, 100 rakes have been loaded by Sonpur division till May 20, 2024, which generated a revenue of ₹35 crore, whereas during the last financial year 2023-24, a revenue of ₹85 crore was generated from the loading of 189 rakes in the entire year.

Similarly, in the current financial year, till May 20, 2024, 72 rakes of maize have been loaded by Samastipur division, which has generated a revenue of ₹27.25 crore, while during the last financial year 2023-24, ₹61 crore revenue has been generated from loading of 122 rakes of maize in the entire year.
