New Delhi: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) plan to redevelop its Delhi campus got a boost with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare giving its nod the proposed master plan of expansion.
The redevelopment plan envisages building of 50 new operation theatres, creation of facilities for additional 3,000 indoor patients, including 300 beds in emergency, hostel facility for 4,000 staff and students and parking space for 14,000 additional vehicles.
In its recommendation, the Parliamentary Panel said that the Ministry must approve the AIIMS-Delhi’s master plan so that the institute by March 2024 could be able to provide world-class facilities to the people at an affordable rate. It further said that the New Delhi Municipal Council (NMDC) shall immediately accord its clearance to the AIIMS’ long-awaited plan to build residential colony for doctors and other medical staff. “The NMDC shall urgently evaluate the residential colony’s proposal so that civil work could commence on it at the earliest,” the committee stated.
AIIMS-Delhi director Randeep Guleria, talking to media persons on August 15, had said that the implementation of the master plan would help the institute transform the delivery system like a world-class university with additional infrastructure and facilities for more patients and their attendants. “We have proposed creation of wards for 3000 more beds in general and 300 bed in the intensive care unit (ICU),” said Guleria.

The master plan also includes development of well-equipped research labs, animal facilities and clinical trial facilities. “A detailed project report (DPR) for redevelopment of AIIMS-Delhi has been submitted to the government,” said Guleria, adding that the master plan has been framed in such a manner that promises to consolidate patient care, teaching, research and administration in East Ansari Nagar campus.

The master plan envisaged outpetient service in the Masjid Moth campus and residential facilities in the Trauma Care Extension Campus. “Our five different land parcels of Masjid Moth, Ansari Nagar East and Trauma centre have also been amalgamated as one unit for holistic development of the campus. The new infrastructure will be raised for Medical Education and Research University by Delhi Development Authority,” added Guleria.
