Subhas Ola’s startup makes it to Amazon Entrepreneurship Challenge

Amazon Smbhav Award

New Delhi: A school dropout of Rajsthan’s Alwar district Subhas Ola is in the news again. His modified steam boiler is competing for the top slot among five incubatees in the Amazon’s Smbhav Entrepreneurship Challenge 2022.

Genius Energy is marketing Ola’s steam boiler for Mawa and Khoya. Earlier, his distinguished innovation was recognised by the National Innovation Foundation, India—an autonomous body of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India—and awarded a National award at the 8th National Grassroots Innovation Awards 2015 by the President of India.

Reason that triggered innovation

Ola, a grassroots innovator, has been a keen observer of his surroundings. His curiosity to reuse heat emitted by automobiles led him to develop energy-saving industrial systems. The conventional heat-based processes in the unorganised sector are fossil fuel, firewood dependent and have a lot of energy wastage.

He modified the boiler system using the condensate heat recovery mechanism to recapture heat in the form of steam, allowing a reduction in fuel and water consumption by up to 30% and 80%, respectively. Along with being environment-friendly, the modified boiler also help the customers reduce significant costs on labour and fuel.

How does boiler work?

Explaining how does the innovative work, an official of Genius Energy said Mawa is an important milk product used to make sweets. It is traditionally prepared by boiling milk until it becomes semi-solid by heating it over firewood and has a lot of energy wastage.

He made modifications to the boiler system using the condensate heat recovery mechanism to recapture heat in the form of steam allowing a reduction in fuel and water consumption by 30% and 80%, on average, respectively. Along with being environment-friendly, the modified Boiler allows the customers to reduce significant costs on labour and fuel.

Cost of innovation

The price of the boiler depends on the size, planned capacity, and the industry for which it needs to be made.

Prizes for Entrepreneurship Challenge

The top incubatee will received a cash prize of ₹40 lakh, while the 1st runner-up will get ₹15 lakh. The product that stands at the third place will receive cash award ₹10 lakh. Besides, the Amazon would provide them marketing and other facilities.
