Bengaluru: After years of battling heavy traffic and long commutes, residents of JP Nagar–a large commercial center and one of the busiest shopping areas–can now look forward to a smoother and more convenient travel experience with the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officially initiating work on Phase 3 of the Namma Metro.

This phase includes two key corridors, with the first stretching 32.15 km from JP Nagar Phase 4 to Kempapura and the second covering 12.5 km from Hosahalli to Kadabagere. JP Nagar Phase 4 will serve as a major hub, connecting to the Pink Line at Bannerghatta Road, making it a significant interchange for commuters.

While a small part of JP nagar already enjoys metro connectivity via Kanakapura Road, the other parts, particularly towards Bannerghatta Road and BTM Layout, remain unconnected and continue to struggle with traffic congestion.

“JP Nagar has been a hotspot for traffic congestion for years, especially during peak hours. This metro extension will be a major relief for thousands of daily commuters,” said a senior BMRCL official, who highlighted that the new phase is expected to reduce traffic pressure on arterial roads in South Bengaluru.

The BMRCL has already acquired 26,811 square meters of land for construction between JP Nagar Phase 4 and Mysuru Road Metro Station. An additional 1,29,743 square meters of land is being acquired for Corridor 1, involving 777 private properties. The total cost of land acquisition alone is pegged at ₹1,900 crore.

For residents like Nisha Rao, who spends nearly two hours commuting to work every day, the project brings much hope. “Every day, we struggle with bumper-to-bumper traffic on Bannerghatta Road and Kanakapura Road. Once this metro line is operational, it will transform the way we travel. I can’t wait for it to be completed,” she said.

The detailed project report (DPR) for Phase 3 estimates a total cost of Rs. 15,611 crore, with funding from loans, revenue from advertising, and station naming rights. The network is projected to cater to 7.28 lakh passengers daily by 2028.

“The completion of this phase will not just improve connectivity but also enhance the quality of life for residents. JP Nagar will no longer be seen as isolated due to traffic. It will become a well-connected and sought-after locality,” said Rakesh Kumar, a local business owner.
