Chandrayaan-3 mission receives international award for ISRO

Isro chairman S Somnath, under whose leadership the mission overcame challenges from Chandrayaan2 and guided it to success, received the award by IAF in Italy

New Delhi: Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Chandrayaan-3 mission received the global recognition for its historic landing on the moon last year in August. The International Astronautical Federation’s (IAF) awarded the mission with its prestigious World Space Award on October 14 at a function held in Milan in Italy. 

India is the first nation to successfully land its lunar exploration mission on the moon’s surface. Chandrayaan-3 had landed near less known area of the moon’s southern pole on August 23, 2023. The award celebrates India’s growing prominence in the global space, community and its contribution to lunar exploration.

Success of the mission placed India among elite group of countries capable of lunar landing. The mission gathered valuable scientific data, including the detection of sulphur and other elements on the moon surface. It has boosted interest in stem fields across India and inspired future scientist and engineers.
